What is DNS propagation?

If you have been running a website for some time you will likely have seen the term “propagation” before, even if you do not really know what it is.

Simply put, propagation or DNS propagation is the time it takes for any DNS changes you make to your website such as changing your nameservers to point your domain to a new hosting provider to take effect across the internet.

The propagation period can take up to 72 hours to be completed, however, it is usually much faster than this. Once the propagation period is completed, the DNS changes you made will be updated across all servers on the internet.

The easiest way to check the progress of your DNS propagation is to use a free tool such as DNS Checker. You can use this to see if the changes have been completed from servers across the globe.
